Speech, Language and Communication.
Speech, language and communication skills are fundamental to children’s learning, wellbeing and relationships. They help children express their needs and feelings, understand others, develop friendships and access the curriculum.
At Southbury, we recognise that some children may need additional support to develop these skills. We work to identify children’s needs and provide appropriate support to help them communicate with confidence.
We look out for children who may:
-
Find it difficult to pronounce words clearly or make themselves understood.
-
Need support to develop their vocabulary or put words together to form sentences.
-
Find it difficult to understand words, questions or instructions.
-
Need help with listening, taking turns and participating in conversations.
-
Find social communication and interacting with others challenging.
Our teachers and Learning Assistants support children through classroom strategies and targeted individual or small-group interventions. A Learning Assistant with speech and language qualifications delivers additional interventions to help children develop their communication skills.
Where a child requires further specialist support, we work with parents and carers to seek advice and arrange referrals to appropriate speech and language services.
We aim to help every child develop their communication skills, express themselves with confidence and build positive relationships with others.
